Description
Hannah de Rothschild (1851-1890) was the only child of Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild and Juliana Cohen. On her father’s death in 1874, she inherited his considerable fortune, including Mentmore Towers in Buckinghamshire and one of the era’s finest collections of art and jewels, making her the wealthiest woman in Britain. In 1878 she married Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, a rising Liberal politician and future Prime Minister. As Countess, she became a prominent political hostess and an important supporter of her husband’s career. She was also noted for her wide-ranging philanthropy, particularly in education, nursing, and social welfare. Hannah died at Dalmeny in 1890, aged 39.
