Description
Catalogue Note:
Andrew Grima emerged in the 1960's as one of the most radical voices in British jewellery design, rejecting the conventions of symmetry and traditional gem setting in favour of a sculptural, organic approach. Grima drew direct inspiration from the natural world, incorporating raw textures, irregular forms and unconventional materials into his work.
By the late 1960's, his designed has reached a pivotal moment, defined by an increasing confidence in translating natural forms into gold with striking immediacy. Rather than idealising nature, Grima sought to preserve its irregularity and spontaneity, often working from found objects and embracing the inherent character of his materials.
His innovative vision quickly attracted international acclaim, culminating in royal patronage, most notably from Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, for whom he created a series of jewels. Today, Grima is widely regarded as one of the most important and original British jewellers of the post-war period, celebrated for redefining the relationship between nature, material and form.
