Description
Mitchel Maer, an American-born designer based in London was a renowned figure in the world of costume jewellery. In the early 1950's, Maer's designs caught the attention of Christian Dior, leading to a collaboration that began in 1952. Although brief, Maer's time designing jewellery for the fashion house was significant. In 1956, Maer's company was declared bankrupt and entered voluntary liquidation. He auctioned off most of his remaining stock and Dior required the original 'Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer' plaques be removed from the pieces prior to their sale. Today, jewellery from the Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer collection are rare, especially those that still retain their original plaques, making them highly sought after by collectors.
