Under the loupe: Alexandrites shine in Elmwood’s Winter Auctions

A FINE BRAZILLIAN ALEXANDRITE AND DIAMOND RING sold for £32,500

This winter, these rare gemstones have seen soaring prices at Elmwood's, when marketed to our global network of buyers.

Suffused with romanticism and folklore, alexandrite is a remarkable and rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Highly prized by for their wonderful colour-changing property, this durable mineral was discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1830s, and quickly entered Russian mysticism as a symbol of harmony and balance. By far its most striking feature is the ability to appear green in daylight or fluorescent light, and red under incandescent light/candlelight. This colour-changing effect is known as pleochroism, and is the result of trace amounts of chromium found within its crystalline structure, causing absorption of light at different wavelengths, resulting in the gem's distinct colour shift.

When considering alexandrite, it's crucial to assess the size, clarity, strength of colour change and origin. As with the vast majority of gemstones, there are also synthetic, lab-created versions of alexandrite, which have become more common due to the scarcity of the mineral found in nature. As with all lab-grown minerals, natural alexandrites command far greater prices at market and retain their value after sale. While lab-grown alexandrites provide an approachable alternative to their natural counterparts, the immense energy needed to create them, as well as their lack of resale value, are detractors for collectors in today market.

AN EXCEPTIONAL UNMOUNTED 1.92 CARAT BRAZILIAN ALEXANDRITE sold for £22,100 in January 2024

Historically found in Russia, Sri Lanka, and Brazil, in recent years new deposits have been discovered in East Africa, expanding the availability of these rare and sought-after gems. However, the most treasured and valuable stones are of Brazilian origin, with many seeing over £10,000 per carat when accompanied by a strong colour change. Today, the gem is associated with good fortune, love and creativity. In addition to its striking beauty, it is known for its supposed metaphysical properties, believed by some to promote balance and harmony in one's life.

Following the resounding success of two alexandrite rings in our winter sales, we were excited to see how collectors responded to an unmounted 1.92 carat Brazilian alexandrite in our 17 January Fine Jewellery sale (pictured above). Accompanied by a gemmological report stating Brazilian origin and superb colour change of 90-100%, the gem sold for £22,100, surpassing its pre-sale estimate of £18,000 – £22,000.
